Blog #2: Is it more worth it to "follow your heart" or go for guaranteed success?

After reading Professor Goeller's response to my blog, I began thinking. My initial topic about choosing a college major was really rooted in what interests people/makes people happy. Would people rather be happy and choose a major which might not guarantee a job after graduation? What about going to grad school; are there any students who choose a degree based on preparing for graduate school, and if so, how many? I feel that if I research this topic, it could help other students, as well as myself, take a look at our majors/intended majors and get more insight into why we chose them and where we can take our careers.

  1. The second blog posting asks you to explore your topic on the web. However, I don't know if you really have a good enough sense of your topic to go exploring. You are also thinking too much of your topic as merely informational, and not analytic. I want you to take on larger policy implications -- not just research for to help yourself, but research that suggests how policies might be changed to help many people. Alternately, you could take on more theoretical questions, such as the question of "happiness" that is much debated. There was a pretty good article in The New Yorker that could introduce you to the field, check it out:

Theories about happiness could at least give your project some dimension. As it is, you have not yet imagined it as a real project. And you are not addressing the second blog question, which asks you to do several explorations online regarding your project.
